- Ramsbottom, John (1814-1897) - Began railroad career with Sharp, Roberts & Co. in 1839; locomotive superintendent of the Manchester & Birmingham Railway 1842-1846; locomotive superintendent of London & North Western Railway's North Eastern Division 1846-1857, then when the division merged with the Northern Division, continued as locomotive superintendent for the Northern Division 1857-1862 [preceded by Francis Trevithick], then when the Northern and Southern divisions were merged in 1862, continued as locomotive superintendent for the whole railroad 1862-1871 [succeeded by Francis William Webb]; retired in 1871 but became a consulting engineer and director for Lancashire & Yorkshire Railway in 1883; director for Beyer-Peacock. Designed the first water troughs that were used by steam locomotives to collect water while at speed.
