Hale Holden was president of the Chicago, Burlington & Quincy Railroad from 1914 to 1918 and again from 1920 to 1929.  He also served as the USRA's western division director, vice president and director for the American Railway Association and chairman of the executive committee for the Association of Railroad Executives.  After leaving the CB&Q, Holden became chairman of the executive committee for Southern Pacific Railroad, serving from 1928 to 1932, and then as chairman of the board for SP from 1932 to 1939.

1.  Hale Holden1 was born on 11 Aug 1869 in Kansas City, Jackson, Missouri, United States.2–8 He appeared in the household of Howard Malcomb Holden in the census on 15 July 1870 in Kansas City, Missouri, United States.9 10 He graduated in 1890 from Williams College in Williamstown, Massachusetts, United States.11–12 Hale was educated  from 22 September 1890 to 1892 at Harvard School of Law in Cambridge, Massachusetts, United States.13 He appeared in the census on 9 June 1900 at 200 East 37th in Kansas City, Missouri, United States.14 He appeared in the census on 3 May 1910 at Columbus Ave, New Trier Township in Winnetka, Illinois, United States.15 Hale lived at 547 West Jackson Blvd in Chicago, Illinois, United States in 1913.16 He lived at 1316 Astor Street in Chicago, Illinois, United States in 1928.7 He sailed from Cherbourg to New York City from 28 November 1928 to 4 December 1928.7 Hale appeared in the census in April 1930 at 610 Park Avenue, Manhattan in New York, New York, United States.17 He appeared in the census on 10 April 1930 at 1316 Astor Street in Chicago, Illinois, United States.18 He sailed from Southampton to New York from 30 September 1933 to 6 October 1933.8 Hale sailed from New York, NY, to Los Angeles, California, from 1 February 1936 to 17 February 1936.6 He listed his address as 165 Broadway, New York, NY. He appeared in the census on 15 April 1940 at East 72nd Street in New York, New York, United States.19 He died on 23 September 1940 at the age of 71 in New York, New York, United States.3,20

2.  Howard Malcomb Holden3 was born on 28 August 1837 in Malden, Middlesex, Massachusetts, United States.9,14,21–22 The birth record reads "Malcolm (changed to Howard Malcolm by order of Probate Court, 9 Oct 1855)" He appeared in the household of Eli Holden in the census on 21 September 1850 in Malden, Middlesex, Massachusetts, United States.23 He appeared in the census on 15 July 1870 in Kansas City, Missouri, United States.9 Howard appeared in the census on 7 June 1880 at May Street in Kansas City, Missouri, United States.10 In 1900 he was a real estate agent in Kansas City, Missouri, United States.21 He appeared in the census on 1 June 1900 in Kansas City, Missouri, United States.21 Howard was also known as Malcolm Holden.22 Mary Finley Oburn and Howard Malcomb Holden3,5 were married on 30 May 1867 in Hanover, Jefferson, Indiana, United States.

3.  Mary Finley Oburn3 was born in December 1843 in Pennsylvania, United States.9,14,21 She appeared in the household of Howard Malcomb Holden in the census on 15 July 1870 in Kansas City, Missouri, United States.9,10,21 She died on 20 March 1928 at the age of 84 in San Diego, California, United States. Mary was also known as Mary O. Holden.10,21

        iii.    Willard Malcolm Holden20–21,25 was born on 14 May 1875 in Missouri, United States.21,25,29,10 In 1900 he was a real estate agent in Kansas City, Missouri, United States.21 He lived at 282 East Market in Akron, Ohio, United States in 1918.25 In 1918 Willard was an accountant at Goodyear Tire & Rubber Co. in Akron, Ohio, United States.25 He registered for the World War I draft on 12 September 1918 in Akron, Ohio, United States.25 He died on 29 June 1953 at the age of 78 in Los Angeles, California, United States.20,29

4.  Eli Holden22 of Malden, Middlesex, Massachusetts, was born on 7 May 1810.23 He appeared in the census on 21 September 1850 in Malden, Middlesex, Massachusetts, United States.23 Phebe Shute and Eli Holden22 were married on 29 April 1832 in Malden, Middlesex, Massachusetts, United States.

5.  Phebe Shute22 was born on 20 April 1810 in Malden, Middlesex, Massachusetts, United States.23 She appeared in the household of Eli Holden in the census on 21 September 1850 in Malden, Middlesex, Massachusetts, United States.23 She was also known as Phoebe Shute Holden.
