Stourbridge Lion D&H F & Rastrick 1829 0-4-0 First loco to operate in the US; arrived in New York on May 13, 1829; its first run on rails in the US was made on August 8, 1829, and its second on September 9; soon afterward put into storage near Honesdale; stripped of parts, boiler shipped to John Simpson's foundry in Carbondale, Pennsylvania, for use as a stationary engine; shut down in 1850; foundry reopened in 1856; out of use by 1871; borrowed in 1883 by the Delaware & Hudson for exhibition at the Exposition of Railway Appliances in Chicago, but was stripped of any useful parts by souvenir hunters; delivered to the Smithsonian in October 1890 where it remains today; all other traceable parts were collected by the museum by 1913; the museum attempted to reconstruct the engine but could not.
