Abbreviations - notes and details describing North American locomotives

A number of abbreviations have been used in the notes on the entries in this roster. These abbreviations, almost all are not case sensitive, are as follows:

• C = circa
• Ex- = formerly
• In svc = in service
• NG = narrow gauge
• Rb = rebuilt (usually followed by a date or year)
• Ret = retired
• Rn = renamed or renumbered (usually followed by a date or year and then the new name and/or number)
• S = sold
• Scr = scrapped (usually followed by a date or year and sometimes a location)
• SG = standard gauge
• SG'ed = converted to standard gauge
• Wd = withdrawn from regular service
• Xf = transferred
